How Safe Are Air Shows?

Pilot, air shows and safety

Two pilots were killed one day after the other while participating in air shows over the weekend. One biplane pilot was performing at the annual air show in Dayton, Ohio last Saturday, July 28.

He died when his plane crashed and caught fire on an airfield across from where spectators were watching the loop-the-loops maneuvers. Firetrucks doused the flames in less than a minute, and the spectators were never in danger.

On Friday, July 27, two planes collided while landing after an exhibition at the Oshkosh, Wisconsin experimental aircraft air show. One pilot was killed, and the other suffered minor injuries. The crash happened when the two aircraft clipped wings as they were landing.

In a related event, a veteran pilot was killed last Monday, July 23, when the experimental plane he was piloting crashed in Switzerland. He was supposed to attend the experimental air show at Oshkosh, and wanted to set a new speed record en route to the United States, by flying over 4,970 miles in 30 hours.

There are many rules on how maneuvers may be performed during air shows in the United States. For instance, slow airplanes are allowed to perform nearer to the spectators, but no closer than 500 feet; faster planes have to stay farther away, at 1000 feet or even more. Aircraft speed is the determinant. There are several other federal regulations.

In addition, pilots performing aerobatics at air shows should earn certificates. The first level certificate allows them to perform only at higher altitudes where they are less likely to pose a danger to the crowd. With more advanced certificates, they can do maneuvers closer to the ground. There are separate training requirements for formation flying.

The federal regulations are strictly implemented. In over 50 years, no spectator watching an air show in the U.S. has been a fatality. Things have been a little different for pilots. Mechanical malfunctions can happen, or there may be pilot error, or a combination of both. That may have been the case in these recent crashes.
