Is Your Christmas Tree Safe from Fire?

Nothing could be more disastrous than having a fire ruin the home. This is bad enough at any time of the year, but the pain will be much worse if the fire breaks out during the Holiday Season. Safety Issues urge you to ensure Christmas tree safety this season. Here are some safety tips.

Share

Christmas Tree

* Select a fresh tree. Needles are green and do not break easily in freshly-cut trees. Bounce the tree trunk on the ground before buying it. If many needles fall to the ground, the tree is no longer fresh, is likely dried out, and is a potential fire hazard.

* Keep the tree away from heat. Properly maintained, the Christmas tree won’t pose too much of a fire hazard. Place the tree in a safe location, preferably near a wall or corner where children or pets cannot knock it over. Keep it away from any source of heat (hot air ducts, fireplaces, wood stoves, etc.) to preserve freshness. Heat causes the tree needles to dry out faster, making the tree more susceptible to getting ignited by sparks or flames. Do not leave the tree up for more than 14 days, which means avoid putting up the tree too early. Make sure the tree stand is always filled with water.

Holiday Lights

* Inspect the lights. Make sure there are no frayed wires and broken sockets. Damaged sets should be disposed. It does not make economic sense to fix them: the risks far outweigh the cheap cost of holiday lights. They can give a person an electrical shock or spark a fire. Check to make sure lighting sets are approved by a recognized testing laboratory (usually UL). If one light bulb burns out, make sure to replace it promptly (with a bulb of the same wattage) to avoid overheating the lights.

* Avoid overloading electrical outlets. Extension cords should accommodate only a maximum of three sets. To avoid tripping hazards, place extension cords against the wall and do not run them under rugs. It is best to connect light sets to the extension cord prior to plugging the cord into an electrical outlet. Check the wires periodically — they should be cool and not warm to the touch. Overheating of wires can cause electrical fires.

* Put out the lights. Never leave lights on when going to bed or leaving the house.

Tree Decorations

* Never use candles as tree decorations. Candles with real flames should be kept far away from the Christmas tree. Unlit candles on a tree can provide unwelcome temptation. Do not go near a Christmas tree with an open flame.

* Place breakable ornaments on higher limbs. This will protect children and pets from broken shards as well as safeguard the breakable items.

* Use only non-flammable decorations. Decorations on a tree should all be nonflammable or at least flame-retardant. Keep them away from heat vents.

When the holidays are over, dispose the tree properly. The best way is to take the tree to a recycling center or to ask a community pick-up service to haul it away.
