Independence Day is the holiday that makes the fervor of patriotism burn brighter than ever. Perhaps it is only appropriate that after the parades, the festivities are marked by a fireworks display.

If you’re planning fireworks on the Fourth of July weekend, remember to ensure everyone in the family is aware of what to do for fireworks safety.

In 2003, the year with the latest available data, hospital emergency departments treated 9,300 injuries related to fireworks use. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that 16 percent of firework-related injuries suffered by consumers are due to improper use of sparklers, especially among young children.

The National Council on Fireworks Safety has recommended these safety tips:

* Never use fireworks at home. In many areas, it is illegal to light fireworks at home. Even if legal, the best way to protect children is to avoid doing this at home.

* As much as possible, children should never play with fireworks. A sparkler burns at 1,800oF, which means it can do a lot of damage of clothing or a child’s face and hair. If you decide to give them sparklers, be sure to have them supervised by an adult.

* Buy only from reputable dealers. Make sure the fireworks are legal (they bear the manufacturer’s name on their labels along with specific directions for use). If there is no label, it is illegal.

* Do not buy fireworks with the names M-80, M100, Cherry bombs, or blockbuster. These are illegal.

* Do not ever think of producing fireworks on your own.

* Never use fireworks inside your home. Use them outside and always have a bucket filled with water or a garden hose nearby.

* Avoid pointing fireworks at homes or at someone.

* Make sure fireworks are far from combustible or flammable substances, like dried leaves, brush, etc. More than 50,000 fires are linked to fireworks every year, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

* Never light firework inside a glass or metal container.

* Light them one at a time. They are not meant for simultaneous use. It is not advisable to combine fireworks because the fuses will burn at different rates.

* Soak duds in water before disposing them. Never relight them. When disposing of fireworks, soak them in a pail of water for several minutes before tossing into the trash can.

* Avoid drinking alcohol if you’re in charge of lighting fireworks.

* Consider how your pet will feel. They have very sensitive ears and will get very frightened. It is best to keep them indoors.

* If children get injured in the yes, make sure they do not rub the eyes to prevent more damage. Water or burn ointment should not be used on the eyes. Get medical attention immediately.

* For burns, run cool (but not cold, so ice should not be used) water over the burnt area.

I agree with you. Proper usage of fireworks will lessen the cause of accidents. It's better if someone older will guide our children on using fireworks. :)
