Security Tips On P2P File Sharing
Although only one man has so far been indicted for identity theft and fraud using peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing networks, experts believe the use of P2P for these criminal purposes is an emerging class of crime that has potential for becoming more widespread.
The CEO of a computer security firm said that consumers often do not know that they have exposed their sensitive personal, financial and health information. Developers of file-sharing software are trying to find ways to make file-sharing safer, according to the CEO of the Distributed Computing Industry Association.
Until that happens, here are some possible solutions for you.
* The simplest, perhaps the most effective, solution against file-sharing risks is to keep your sensitive data stored on another computer which is not using the file-sharing software.
* Though some packages are safer than others, file-sharing software programs are generally risky to use. Another simple solution is do not install and use these programs. If you already have a P2P program installed, remove it. At the very least, disable the software’s uploading capability.
* Disable the general file-sharing features on your operating system – unless it is absolutely essential for others to have access to non-copyrighted materials on your computer.
* Prevent anyone from using your computer. Use a strong password and guard it like a state secret. Turn off your computer when you’re not using it.
* If you have permitted file sharing, others may have access to your system and your IP address. The more information an intruder has about your computer, the applications used and its hardware settings, the easier it becomes to hack into your system and, through your system, to the networks where you are connected. Generally, the rule is the longer your system is open to others, the easier it is to hack.
* Set rules on what programs can or cannot be used on your computers and networks, and on how to obtain permission for new software installations. Parents should make sure no software is installed without their permission.
* Make sure you have adequate protective software in your computer. These include an adware blocker, a firewall, and an anti-virus program. A firewall is different from an anti-virus program. The anti-virus software reviews files that you intentionally download or install. A firewall keeps out intruders and attempts to install something without your knowledge. You are not fully protected until you use both.
* Having the software and using it properly are two different things. Using the wrong settings, or disabling it because it takes too long to load, will expose you to malicious code and hacking attacks.
