Report Highlights Lifeboat Safety Issues
ABC News Online, December 13, 2004

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is recommending ship owners pay more attention to crew training, maintenance and operational safeguards for lifeboats.

In its fourth report on lifeboat accidents in five years, the bureau has identified four key contributing factors in lifeboat accidents.

They include the complex design of lifeboat release mechanisms, poor crew training, insufficient maintenance and less than adequate manufacturers' instructions for the equipment.

The bureau is reminding ship owners and crews there are considerable risks associated with the use of lifeboats.
