A week long letter to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Yovette MumfordOn this Day of Martin Luther King’s Birthday, most Americans are oblivious to the protests and violent riots going on around the world concerning food shortages, rising fuel costs, and staggering numbers of homeless people with treatable diseases going untreated due to shortages of medicines and limited access to clean water. I therefore must ask myself: Why are most Americans, with more access to information than ever before, with more racial harmony than every before,  are so helpless and many oblivious to this on-going catastrophes and oppression? Today, Dr. King, you remain the most credible American spokesman as the international face of America for people of color in all countries. We not only have the first U.S. President of African descent, but around the world we now have a face of an African or Hispanic American as the poster for the American dream. In China there are large billboards of Michael Jordan, Oprah, Bionce, and Jayz is on the cover of “Rolling Stone Magazine” as King of America. Randy Jackson is the most respected, no drama judge on American Idol, Serena and Venus tennis female supremes, Tiger Woods, Collin Powell, Condelessa Rice, 2 term Governor Deval Patrick, Lenny Kravitz, Michael Jackson, Jesse Jackson, Hank Aaron, the list goes on….This letter is a report and plea for guidance as we connect with you as the icon for peace, seeking consciousness as we fight for the American Creed that all men are created equal. I take your prose and retrofit it to the present day environment in which most Americans find themselves.

Seven score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree is still a great beacon and light of hope to millions who have been seared in the flames of withering injustice. One hundred and fifty years later, over 150 million Americans of all nationalities still languish on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity held by less than 2% of the elite extracted by a private central banking cartel which confiscates our wealth through unjust taxation. Our social security numbers now act as our ID numbers in this concentration camp called America. In a sense, on this memorial of your Birthday, we seek your consciousness as a Buddha of peaceful co-oexistence for economic social balance. We celebrate your Birthday as a national holiday in our nation’s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our Republic wrote the magnificent words of the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” It is obvious today that the American government, since 1933, has been taken over by the interest of a few who would hide their rapacious culpability in the form of corporations. Their treachery has defaulted on this promissory note written by our forefathers. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, the American government have been taken over by corporations which do not serve the people of this great Nation.
We, all immigrants, who came to America for economic, religious and social freedoms, have been seduced by false advertisements and false hopes, in the form of a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.”Yet we refuse to believe that the Bank of our Natural Resources, and the pleadings to God for a greater Justice, will now be rendered bankrupt by the corruption of our politicians. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the Great Vaults of Riches and Opportunity upon which this nation rests. And so we’ve come to cash our checks, checks that will give us upon demand the riches of Freedom and the security of Justice originally enshrined in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the United States.
We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now! This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism, or humbly await the trickle down effect from the bailouts of big multi-national corporations and banking cartels who have manipulated us and hoodwinked us to attempt to survive on fiat money and the indentured servitude of multi-generational debt at compound interest to a foreign banking cartel masquerading as a part of our Federal Government, better known as the “Federal” Reserve System. Nor shall we go meekly into courts controlled by this hydra-headed monster, under the false assumption of guilt — in stark contrast to every other judicial act — to be brought to it by an enforcement arm of this foreign banking cartel when, as they ruefully admit in a court of law that all income tax is actually voluntary!
Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of unaccountable greed and economic segregation to the sunlit path of education, balance and safety.
Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of extreme economic and social injustice to the solid rock of genuine opportunity, while stripping ourselves free of the omni-present shackles of “credit ratings” which chain us to the plight of homelessness, joblessness, intra-family strife and the condescension of our neighbors.
Now is the time to make food, clean water, sheltered survival and safety a reality for all of God’s children. Those who blindly hope that the economic plight of the vast majority of the American people simply needed to blow off steam during the last election cycle, and will now be once more content with ruminating upon more propaganda delivered by the pasty pablum pundits of our censored media can expect a very rude awakening if this nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquillity in America until we take back the right to choose how our tax dollars are being spent and until our elected representatives to the Capital do our bidding, rather than continuing to act as mere automata of the multi-national corporations, or as mindless puppets of certain Middle East countries. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright light of justice emerges. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high planes of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights by meeting physical force with the soul force of determined, disciplined Love — Love of Life and Freedom to pursue our course, free from the chains of unending taxation and the savage sublimation of our Constitutional Rights.
What has been stolen from the American public, through the on-going ignorance of a complicit, lap-dog media, whether it is our vast wealth or the abrogation of our God-given rights in the bogus pursuit of imaginary security, must be restored fully, completely and permanently to our body politic. Dr. King had a dream, that one day this nation will rise up and live up to the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
Unfortunately I have to report that the disparities he saw when he made his speech have become greater than they have ever been at any other time in our history. Dr. King said that he had a dream, that a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of Freedom and Justice.
We are living in a nightmare where Americans have semi automatic weapons that fire a mind blowing 31 rounds of bullets in less than 30 seconds. We have youth consumed with the mental illness of despair, who takes aim with these weapons of mass destruction and fire indiscriminately at women, children and civilians. We have our first African President, brilliant, self composed, strong husband, father  profile, yet US media and political pundants marginalize his efforts. Through no fault of his own,  he is being held captive as the icon for the archetype “Spook who sits in the White house” tap dancing so much to the tunes played by large American corporations and private banking cartels that I fear he will drop from exhaustion before any changed agenda is accomplished. Revisiting your ideals on your birthday no nearly 40 years old, we seek to be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a Stone of Hope. With this Faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to stand up for
freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
